ABC's famous investigative reporter Brian Ross has been suspended from the news channel for four weeks without pay over spreading Fake News. On Friday he stated that a confidant of former national security advisor Mike Flynn had said that during the campaign, candidate Trump had asked Flynn to contact the Russians which would be a major ethical violation.
The truth, however, was that Trump had already won the election and was in the process of transitioning to power…And as such, asking Flynn to contact the Russians in his role as security advisor was not only okay, it was, in fact, expected.
Apparently, Flyn was asked to contact the Russians by president-elect Trump with regards to their actions and policy toards dealing with ISIS. This is what an incoming president SHOULD be doing. By casting aspersions and “making a mistake” like this, they are feeding into a narrative that is not only false but also damaging to the US and US security arrangements.
ABC released a statement on Saturday admitting the mistake. They said:
“We deeply regret and apologize for the serious error we made yesterday. The reporting conveyed by Brian Ross during the special report had not been fully vetted through our editorial standards process. As a result of our continued reporting over the next several hours ultimately we determined the information was wrong and we corrected the mistake on air and online.
It is vital we get the story right and retain the trust we have built with our audience –- these are our core principles. We fell far short of that yesterday. Effective immediately, Brian Ross will be suspended for four weeks without pay.”
But has the apology reached as far as “the news”? Has the damage already been done?
