Liberal writer, Sarah Jaffe has just outed herself as either an idiot or a terrible person. With the shocking storms thrashing Florida, almost to be expected come the Looters. The Miami Police Department put out a post sharing a picture of people sat in a jail cell with the message: Thinking about Looting? Ask these guys how it turned out.
In response to this, Jaffe Tweeted out”The carceral state… is inseparable from white supremacy.” Does she feel that looters should not be locked up? Or does she feel only white looters should be locked up? If she wanted to make a statement on incarceration numbers in the US, then she should, but suggesting that locking up criminals is white supremacy is pure lunacy. It's not just the United States that locks up people who commit crimes, it's pretty much all nations…even those that are run by black people.
By what logic does she criticise a society that stops looters! Looters are the lowest of the low. These are not people stealing bread or water to help them survive an emergency; these are opportunistic people taking advantage of a terrible situation to get sneakers and TVs. And they don't just steal from stores, they steal from homes, too.
Imagine someone in emergency services out from their home risking their life to save others, returns home to find their things gone! Should that thief be incarcerated? What if they had stolen from other black people? This is not about race, it's about criminals, and in the case of Jaffe, the ignorant.
An author and journalist came under fire on social media Monday, after she tweeted a reply to an anti-looting warning from Miami police by saying: “The carceral state… is inseparable from white supremacy.”
The Miami Police Department took to Twitter on Sunday, as Hurricane Irma battered the state. “Thinking about looting? Ask these guys how that turned out. #stayindoors,” the post read, sharing a photo of people inside a jail cell.
Though Sarah Jaffe’s tweet on Monday garnered 1,500 likes, it sparked more than 100 comments — many of which were critical and accused her of being racist.
“They have prisons, crime, and private property in Nigeria too,” one user wrote. “And Egypt. And India. Nothing to do with white supremacy. Poverty/inequality.”
“So you'd be ok with someone breaking into your house and stealing all your stuff to avoid a ‘carceral state'?” another asked.
